Several months ago I pulled out my old Uplink game and decided to play it again. There is something about the game that makes it fun to play for me. The music and the atmosphere appeals to me, not to mention that cyberpunk is one of my favorite genres. I’m not sure exactly how much of Uplink would be considered cyberpunk but it shares some characteristics. While Uplink might have turned seven years old in August, I can’t help wishing there was a multiplayer version of this game. I know there are at least some other people that feel the same way.
So after being inspired I set out to look to see if anyone has already created something like Uplink. I ran across JLink (Java based clone) which appears to be practically dead. There are some other web based hacking simulations but they aren’t anything like Uplink. The two that I’m talking about are Slavehack and Hacker Project. None of the web based simulations appear to be anything like Uplink and while they have similarities, their game play is different. There is one other one that caught my eye and it’s iHacker but it appears to be single player only and filled with a lot of eye candy.
Since there is nothing that fits what I’m looking for I decided that I would take it upon my self to fill the void. What I want is a web based game simply because I think it would be the easiest for me to develop. I’m sure I could start looking at making a desktop application and then develop my client, server and protocol, but that is way more time consuming to me. I would have the freedom to do pretty much anything visual or audio wise except Uplink is very simple and doesn’t need to be flashy. I also think that the music in the game and sound effects added considerably to the atmosphere to give it the feel. The only problem with that is I’m not that good with Flash nor do I have the Flash CS4 Professional (plus I would have to switch back to Windows). Most of the requirements that I want to do are easily met using Javascript and PHP.
I want to make a clone but I don’t want to make an exact clone. I want it to have the feel of Uplink but the game play must be different. I don’t think many people want to play the same game entirely so it must be different enough. The game play also must change to support a large number of users. All of the users can’t be hacking banks and stealing tons of money or framing users for crimes they didn’t commit. The speed of the hacks must be changed to take a longer period of time and I don’t want to force limits of the number of computers or jobs you can do in a period of time. The most important thing is that it should be fun and it shouldn’t be horribly repetitive. It is nearly impossible to prevent that but I don’t want it to be something that happens soon. In Uplink it was more of a real time simulation and if the user disconnects and the latency took to long then that might effect game play.
Right now I have a lot of ideas and cool things that I would eventually add but nothing that makes it a “game”. I mean there is no clear objective other than to gain money and possibly appear as a top ranked player. I want to do something with alliances and make certain hacks require more than one person. I’m thinking about making a portion of the game like CTF or maybe if having something where there are specific computers which you have to keep control of or protect. It is hard to say right now. I’ve made a sample video of what I’ve completed so far. I haven’t worked on it since I’ve made the video and I’ve been very busy with work.
Update (November 04, 2008)
I just wanted to mention that this is about 20 days worth of development.

I’m so in, I don’t think getting help should be hard, I still think the interest for filling this void, is quite huge
Write me an response pr. email ;D
Think thats awesome, and if that map works like google earth its gonna be so pro!
Hit me up if u need help with stuff, mostly graphics tho.
Awesome, always loved the original Uplink and I’m most interested in the multiplayer aspects of this version.
I’d be most delighted to be apart of this, though my time is limited, should you need any help coding you let me know.
wow thats amazing, how is it going so far?
email me
hackwars.net and vpc-hack.net are some fun hacking games and they have quality eyecandy. I love the graphics compared to uplink.
nice man!
i would love to help you in this project, and the sound stuff is not dificult to do with html and javascript.
email me and i’m sure i’ll do my best to help on it!
Hi! Would love to help you develop this game. I also picked my uplink game some days ago and just blasted through it
please contact me if you needhelp with it
Whats the progress with the game
?
I have signed in through FB but all i get is…. Nothing?
Hope for an update from you
cheers,
Hey
I’m a PHP, ActionScript2/3 and Java developer. If this project is still around, or you still have interest in finishing it/re-working it, get back with me. I’ve been working on a prototype in Java, just looking for some companions to make all of this work together.
Dude this looks so awesome. I’m pretty savy with Photoshop and can design some kick ass interfaces. I’d like to contribute to this project.
this seems like a project I’d like to help out on – I’m a php programmer. and I’d love to help is this projects still active?
I think the latency issue could be solved quite easily with ajax and sound can be done easily now via the HTML5 element.
To make hacks take longer, make them require more skills. Have the ability to run nmap scans (or similar). Pull in some vulnerabilities every now and then. And most importantly, have some basic scripting.
If you put this up on an open source repository you could have this completed very very quickly.
I was just considering creating the exact same thing – web based version of Uplink, when I stumbled across your project.
Since the project is not public, I may still work on this.. but it would be much more efficient if you had others to help you out.
Update plz?
